We need you to really take a look at this.

Nothing is more important to our children’s futures than how well they can learn when they get there. How well they can learn when they get there depends on their confidence in learning. It is our children’s confidence in learning that is most at stake.

Over 60% of our kids are (have been for decades) chronically below grade level proficiency in reading. Chronic difficulty with reading has collateral effects. The kids blame themselves. They think there is something wrong with their ability to learn, they feel ‘not good enough’ / ‘not smart enough’ at learning. Reading related difficulties are causing many millions of our children to grow up ashamed of their minds and it’s unnecessarily damaging their confidence in their abilities to learn.

Yet 98% of the children who struggle with reading have enough oral language to learn to read if they had the right ‘scaffolding’. The problem is not and has never been with them, it’s been with us. Everything about the ways we currently teach reading is based on the the archaic ways we think about the relationship between orthography and reading instruction.

This video represents the beginning of a new chapter in the history of teaching reading. Help us get this into the minds of everyone who cares about children and their futures.

It starts with recognizing the fundamental, profound, and capital value of ‘stewarding the health of our children’s learning.’

Is there an educational mission that trumps, that is more important than “stewarding the health of our children’s learning”?

Ultimately what’s going to shift the behavior of the country over the long-term is understanding how fundamental this [healthy learning] is to everybody through the economic channel. …We must come up with a way of describing, measuring, and supporting the health of children’s learning. It is the unhealthy learning environments that are the problem.

Yes, that’s the message. That’s the message you’ve got to get across. Arthur Rolnick Senior V.P. and Director of Research at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, and Associate Economist with the Federal Open Market Committee.

It’s not that somebody ‘knows’ the current science, because the current science might be wrong. But it’s that somebody knows how to learn about new science, and adapt. It’s also how they learn to adapt to workplaces… how to learn to do something that they had never even thought about doing when they were in school. That’s the key element. So then the fundamental intention of our education system must be to use knowledge, skills and experience not just as the end, but as the means through which we’re exercising how well someone is able to participate and become self-extending in learning what they need to learn when they need to learn it.
